Performance overview
Staging the onstage and backstage of a film set. At once.
When the ‘A Super Date with Mr Broom’ film crew opens its studio tour to outside audiences, both onstage and backstage creatives are brought into view, offering a broader glimpse into the production team. Within this setting, the film, presented as a play-within-a-play, follows a girl’s whimsical fantasy of falling in love with her broom.

The idea
Design concept?
Hi, Mr Broom.
Mr Broom is the protagonist of our staged film, whose abstract graphic defines the project’s key visual. This motif brings the surreal, playful tone of the film into the performance’s studio tour setting.

Design approach
When the performance becomes an immersive film studio visit.
Props, projections, environment, audience keepsakes, all worked together. The design made the audience feel inside a working film studio, rather than watching a film acted out on stage.

Outcome
Full marks. Artist applauded.
Recognised at Australia’s top design award.
As a student project, this project received a high distinction of 91 out of 100 points, with my individual mark achieving full scores in design, performance, and commitment.
An award-winning dance artist applauded the show, and audience members later shared praise and photos on social media.
Most notably, a faculty member provided a dedicated letter of support for submitting the design part of this project to the AGDA Awards 2025. It was selected as 1 of 17 finalists in the Student Brand Identity category.
Organised by the Australian Graphic Design Association, the awards are among Australia’s leading in the design sector.
In line with university policy, recordings and additional media from the formal performance, other than those included in this page, cannot be shared publicly.
